Anger as mum finds dirty needles and syringes outside two Wishaw primary schools. 14th December 2017.

  • A young mum who was walking with her two children was horrified to stumble across a pair of discarded dirty needles and syringes just a stone’s throw from two Wishaw primary schools.
    The woman, who lives close by, made the shocking find just off Campbell Street near Young Street, close to Wishaw Academy and St Ignatius’ Primary Schools around 8pm last Monday.
    She said: “It was horrific, epecially as my kids were there. Over 600 children go to those schools, as well as nursery kids, and not all of them are aware of the danger of things like this and could easily go and pick them up.”


    The mum, whose kids attend Wishaw Academy Primary, said her children sometimes run on ahead when she is walking home with them in daylight hours.
    But since she made the shocking discovery, she says she’ll insist on keeping them close.
    “I have never noticed anything like this in the area before and I’ve never seen any evidence of drug use here,” she said. “I was horrified. This needs to be highlighted. I was under the impression there were needle exchanges which would mean there would be no reason for things like that to be left.
    “I know that drug addiction is an illness but I would much rather they kept it away from the kids.
    “My reaction was one of anger. A curious child could easily have picked that up. It doesn’t bear thinking about.”

    The mum says she didn’t know of any authorities she could report the find to, but is making a point of highlighting the danger to other parents.

    A spokesman for North Lanarkshire Council said the environmental services team went to the scene last Tuesday morning to remove the syringes and made a repeat visit to check there had been no recurrence.
